Why You Should Present

Read about the benefits of presenting at conferences and meetups.

  • 1. Showcasing your ideas

Presenting your ideas showcases yourself as a thinker, visionary and leader. Even if you don’t see yourself as those, you are since by getting up on stage is a large step that most people do not take. No one can talk from your perspective and experience like you can.

  • 2. Increase the demand for yourself

Developers and everyone in technical fields are constantly creating new things; libraries, packages, repostories and tools. By publishing those to your various social networks only gets you so far. Blogging about it also only gets you so far. Getting on stage with it shows off the capabilities and the benefits to an engaged and eager audience.

  • 3. Showcase yourself

In the ever changing workforce your public profile will become your resume. Since everyone in the workforce is spending less time at a company before changing jobs that means that there will be more constant and competitive job market. If you have a public presence the demand for you will always be higher than the rest of the job market.

The Proposal

From the start of the proposal there are already a couple of options that you need to consider; do you want to speak at a specific conference or do you want to share a specific idea. That question alone will decide your path on what needs to be in the proposal and what to put in there.
Those two strategies are great starting points but that is not even taking into account the selection committee. How do you share exactly what you want to cover with enough detail for the committee to select yours.

The Deck

Once you are selected there are even more questions that are raised. Some you do not even potentially know about. Do you get to use your laptop? Do you have to use their slide format? How technical is your information?
From there then you have to figure out your presentation style and what will work with your deck.
You will learn how to craft a deck that matches your presentation style and what too focus in on each of your slides.

The Delivery

Before you even get on stage there are some strategies that will help you deliver an awesome presentation. From reducing your nervousness and remaining calm to the other end of the spectrum not being monotone and having the audience sleep on you.
This is the actual part that the audience will remember so how to make it stick with them long after the conference ends is the actual key to your success.
You will learn how to make a great impression on everyone in the room.
